The 2nd Coming of Christ / Millennium
The Bible clearly teaches that Christ is coming back to Earth. His return, like His first coming, has a purpose and that purpose will be determined in this study. There is considerable debate regarding the exact happenings and sequencing of events surrounding Christ’s return. We will attempt to stay in our mold of discussing what the Bible says, what it does NOT say while also exposing you to the various interpretations of this prophecy of future events.
I. The 2nd Coming of Christ
I Thessalonians 4:13-18
13But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
II. The Millennium
Revelation 19:11-20:15
11And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. 17And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; 18That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. 19And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. 20And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. 21And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. Revelation 20 1And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. 4And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. 7And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. 10And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 11And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 13And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. 14And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. III. Reference Material Second Coming
Christ’s future return to the earth at the end of the present age. Although the Bible explicitly speaks of Christ’s appearance as a "second time," the phrase "second coming" occurs nowhere in the New Testament. Many passages, however, speak of His return. In fact, in the New Testament alone it is referred to over 300 times.
The night before His crucifixion, Jesus told His apostles that He would return (John 14:3). When Jesus ascended into heaven, two angels appeared to His followers, saying that He would return in the same manner as they had seen His go (Acts 1:11). The New Testament is filled with expectancy of His coming, even as Christians should be today. Various opinions exist about what is meant by the Second Coming. Some regard it as the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Others regard it as the coming of Christ into the heart at conversion. Christ’s coming for the believer at the time of death is still another view. Careful examination of the New Testament, however, makes it clear that the Second Coming will be a climatic historical event. The Lord will return in the same manner in which He left. His coming will be personal, bodily, and visible. The time of the Second Coming is unknown. In fact, Jesus stated that only the Father knew the time. Therefore, the return of the Lord should be a matter of constant expectancy. As He came the first time, in the "fullness of time" (Galatians 4:4), so will the Second Coming be. The believer’s task is not to try to determine the time of the Second Coming. We should share the gospel message diligently until He returns (Acts 1:8-11). The Millennium
The thousand-year period mentioned in connection with the description of Christ’s coming to reign with His saints over the earth (Revelation 19:11-16; 20:1-9). Many Old Testament passages refer to the millennium (Isaiah 11:4; Jeremiah 3:17; Zechariah 14:9). These and many other Old Testament passages are often taken to refer only to the thousand year period itself. However, it is often difficult in these passages to see a clear dividing line between the earthly period of the millennium and the eternal state of new heavens and earth. Therefore, it is best to let one’s teaching of the millennium to be drawn specifically from the words in Revelation 20. The other great promises to Israel, while they have a temporary fulfillment in the thousand years, still await the fullness of the new heavens and new earth and the unhindered presence of Israel’s king and the church’s husband – Jesus Christ our Lord. During that thousand-year period, Satan will be bound in the bottomless pit so he will not deceive the nations until his short period of release (Revelation 20:3,7-8). The faithful martyrs who have died for the cause of Christ will be resurrected before the millennium. They will rule with Christ and will be priests of God and Christ (Revelation 5:10; 20:4). The unbelieving dead will wait for the second resurrection (Revelation 20:5). After the thousand years, Satan will be released and will resume his work of deceit (Revelation 20:7-8). The most important aspect of the millennium is the reign of Christ. Peter taught that Christ now rules from the right hand of God (Acts 2:33-36). That rule will last until His enemies are made His footstool (Psalm 110:1). The apostle Paul also understood Christ to be presently reigning in a period designed to bring all of God’s enemies underfoot (1 Corinthians 15:25-27). Thus, the impact of Christ’s present rule over the earth from God’s right hand must not be seen as unrelated to His future reign during the millennium. The millennium is viewed by interpreters in several different ways. One position holds that the millennium only refers to Christ’s spiritual rule today from heaven. This symbolic view is known as the amillennial interpretation. Another position views Christ’s spiritual rule as working through preaching and teaching to bring gradual world improvement leading up to Christ’s return. This is the postmillennial view. The position that holds to an actual thousand year period in the future is known as the premillennial view. This interpretation does not diminish the power of Christ’s present rule from heaven or limit that rule to the church only. That position sees the need for a thousand-year place in history for an earthly fulfillment of Israel’s promises of land and blessing. It stresses that the one thousand years in Revelation 20 are actual years and are not symbolic. (from Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary) (Copyright (C) 1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers)
IV. Further Thoughts
Second Coming
The scriptures teach plainly that Jesus is coming back. Many have grown impatient or weary of waiting. Perhaps these are the reasons for some of the far-flung ideas men get. Regardless, the Bible prophesied that such would occur.
2 Peter 3:4
4And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation
2 Peter 3:8-13
8But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 11Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 12Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 13Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness
When will all of this occur?
Only the Father knows, excluding even the Son in the knowledge:
Matthew 24:36
36But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only
It is odd that so many attempt to lay out the sequence of events (chronology) of Christ’s return, yet we almost universally agree that "time shall be no more" at that point!
Some facts re: His returning:
1. Jesus will return in the same fashion as he ascended – we will know Him (Acts 1:9,11) 2. Jesus will appear with great glory (Titus 2:12; Matthew 24:30; Matthew 1:27) 3. Jesus will return in the clouds (Matthew 24:30; 26:64; Revelation 1:7) 4. He WILL NOT come from the East. This idea is misinterpreted from:
Matthew 24:27
27For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be
The message intended was that it will come quickly and all will see Him! (Just think of all those Christian graves with bodies buried facing the East?!?!? Why?)
5. Jesus will return with a shout and the voice of the archangel / trump of God (I Thessalonians 4:16) 6. Jesus will return accompanied by His angels (Matthew 16:27; 25:31; Mark 8:38; 2 Thessalonians 1:7) and with His saints (1 Thessalonians 3:13; Jude 14) 7. His return will be sudden (Mark 13:36); unexpected (Matthew 24:44; Luke 12:40) and as a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10; Revelation 16:15) 8. Those who have died in Christ will rise first (1 Thessalonians 4:16) 9. The Judgment will follow His return (Matthew 24) 10. Jesus is not coming back to make atonement (Hebrews 9:28; Romans 6:9-10; Hebrews 10:14) Scriptural advice for saints: 1. Be ready (Matthew 24:44; Luke 12:40) 2. Watch (Matthew 24:42; Mark 13:35-37; Luke 21:36) 3. Take comfort (1 Thessalonians 4:18) Description of sinners: 1. Will scoff (2 Peter 3:3,4) 2. Will be surprised (Matthew 24:37-39; 1 Thessalonians 5:3; 2 Peter 3:10) 3. Will be punished eternally
2 Thessalonians 1:8,9
8In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power
MILLENNIUM
This term is not found in the Scriptures. It refers to the 1,000 year period of time in which some believe that Christ will reign physically upon the Earth. The most common terminology heard is "the millennial reign of Christ" and is a hot topic in today’s modern "church culture". It has become prevalent once again due, in part, to the "Left Behind" book series and movie. The three main views of the "millennial reign" are: (also worthy to note is that there are multitudes of variations from each of these three)
1. Pre-millennial: view that there will be a literal 1,000 year earthly reign 2. Post-millennial: view that 1,000 years has already been accomplished in history 3. A-millennial (non-millennial): view that 1,000 years is only symbolic Most of this doctrine is derived from the book of the Revelation. Concerns arise from the fact that this teaching is only in one book (and a non-literal book at that?!?) and that Jesus never mentioned such a "millennial reign" Himself. Whether or not one takes the book of Revelation literally or symbolically is what is truly behind this discussion. Those who interpret it literally tend to be "pre", while symbolic readers lean towards "post" or "a" interpretations. The truth is that the book of Revelation is both literal (the first few chapters which discuss those things which "have been" and symbolic "those things which are "yet to come"). Many of our churches, with whom we readily and freely exchange letters of recommendation, teach pre-millennial views. While this seems to be of great concern, it really should not be considered a point or test of fellowship. Whether one believe is right or the other, it does not affect the gospel message or plan of salvation. When this point of contention is manifested at Christ’s coming…..who is going to care at that point?!?!? However it occurs is up to God, will be perfect, and will satisfy me 100% percent. I feel strongly that if the Lord wanted us to ponder and piddle over this particular doctrine…He would have made it a point to have discussed it Himself and stressed its importance to our Faith and practice. The primary teaching point and Hollywood interest point is the "Rapture" of the church. This is the teaching of the Lord’s church being taken out of the world and everyone else "left behind". I recommend that you read a couple of books that I have if you are interested. One is entitled, "Why I left the Pre-Millennialist Camp" and is written by one of our MBC preachers. The other is also by a MBC elder (deceased) named P.D. Ballard and is titled, "Gold Tried In The Fire". I also recommend that you stay away from the "Left Behind" books and movie. The fact is that we will all know when it happens! This subject is one which is worthy of our further study and discussion. Because of its popularity in modern culture presently, we should each be able to feel confident in discussing this subject with people of differing opinions.
V. For those who wish to pursue further study
Summary of the four views on Revelation:
1. Preterist: teaches that all the events of Revelation were fulfilled during the period of the Roman Empire 2. Historical: Revelation is a panorama of church history from the apostolic era until the consummation 3. Idealist: Revelation is not a representation of actual events, but is rather a symbolic depiction of the spiritual warfare between good and evil 4. Futurist: Beginning with chapter 4, Revelation describes future events accompanying the end of the age See dry erase boards for visual aids re: Millennial views
