Our Church Covenant, Lesson 8

(printer friendly version)

"We engage…to be exemplary in our deportment,"

Deportment: "conduct, behavior"

1. Men want to see, not hear about Jesus in our living

a. Men continue to want to see Jesus in us today

John 12:21 "The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus."

b. They have a right to expect to see Him in us!

Matthew 5:16 "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

James 2:18 "Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works."

2. There is great power in teaching by example

a. Jesus’ example

John 13:15 "For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you."

I Peter 2:21 "For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps."

b. It was Paul’s counsel to Timothy

I Timothy 4:12 "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."

c. The record of Israel’s sins were given for this purpose

1 Corinthians 10:6 "Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted."

3. Exemplary deportment demands separation

2 Corinthians 6:17 "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you."

This does not refer to separation from contact with the world, but from conformity to it.

John 17:15 "I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil."

Romans 12:2 "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

1 John 2:15 "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him."

"We engage…to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger;"

1. Avoid all tattling

a. The Bible had nothing good to say about a tale (gossip) bearer

Proverbs 18:8 "The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly."

Proverbs 26:20 "Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth."

Proverbs 20:19 "He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips."

b. He is never considered a faithful person

Proverbs 11:13 "A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter."

c. To avoid it means to refuse to listen to it, as well as refusing to participate in it.

2. Avoid all backbiting

a. Backbiters are not fit for the house of God

Psalms 15:1-3 "1Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? 2He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. 3He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor."

b. How to drive it away

Proverbs 25:33 "The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue."

3. Avoid excessive anger

We are all subject to a little "righteous indignation" occasionally, but excessive anger is another thing. We are to avoid fits of temper and insane rage.

a. This can be done by watching our language

Proverbs 15:1 "A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger."

b. Strife can be prevented by avoiding excessive anger

Proverbs 15:18 "A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife."

c. Self control is highly recommended

Proverbs 16:32 "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city."

Proverbs 19:11 "The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression."

"We engage…to abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage"

1. Wine often seen to be a tool of sin

a. It brought shame to Noah Genesis 9:21

b. Brought fornication to the house of Lot Genesis 19:32, 36

c. Led to the murder of Ammon 2 Samuel 13:28

d. Caused Belshazzar to sin and bring about his own death Daniel 5:1, 2, 5, 30-31

2. Wine is the companion of evil and sorrow

Hosea 4:11 "Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the heart."

Proverbs 21:17 "He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich."

Proverbs 23:29-30 "Who hath woe?" who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? 30They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine."

3. Strong drink strongly condemned in the Scriptures

Proverbs 20:1, Proverbs 31:4, Ephesians 5:18, Proverbs 23:31

"We engage…to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior."

1. The Lord Himself administrate His kingdom with zeal

Isaiah 9:7 "Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this."

2. The Lord wants His people to be zealous

a. It is a characteristic of His people

Titus 2:14 "14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works."

b. Right kind of zeal has a good influence over others

2 Corinthians 9:2 "For I know the forwardness of your mind, for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia, that Achaia was ready a year ago; and your zeal hath provoked very many."

3. Misguided zeal is dangerous

a. Peter’s zeal of misguided when he cut off Malchus’ ear Matthew 26:51-52

b. Paul’s zeal caused him to persecute the church Philippians 3:6

c. The Jews zeal defiled the temple John 2:16-17

d. Paul warns of zeal without knowledge

Romans 10:2 "For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge."

4. The zeal of God’s people should be for the advancement of the savior’s kingdom

a. The charges against the 7 churches of Asia in Revelation chapters 2 and 3 are things that hindered the advancement of those churches

b. The things that advance the Savior’s kingdom are simple, but fundamental (Matthew 28:19-20)

1. Soul-winning

2. Proper observance of the ordinances

3. Teaching the observation of the full truth from God’s Book

c. While these are sometimes hindered by misguided zeal, they are equally hindered by a lack of zeal

"We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love"

1. God’s people are brethren

Matthew 23:8 "But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren."

a. As such, we are taught of God to love one another

I Thessalonians 4:9 "But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another."

b. In love, we are responsible for helping an erring brother

2 Thessalonians 3:14-15 "14And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed. 15Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother."

c. We should always seek brotherly reconciliation

Matthew 5:23-24 "23Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift."

d. Our brotherly love for one another is the very evidence of our sonship

I John 3:14 "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death."

I John 4:20 "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?"

e. A lack of brotherly care shows a lack of brotherly love

I John 3:17 "But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?"

2. We cannot excuse ourselves from brotherly responsibility as Cain tried to do

Genesis 4:9 "And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?"

I John 3:15 "Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him."

I am responsible for what happens to my brother it I am in a position to prevent it

3. As brethren, we should not seek to take advantage of a brother as did Jacob

a. Drove a hard bargain with his brother for his birthright Genesis 25

b. Stole his brother’s blessing Genesis 27

c. The proper attitude

Romans 12:10 "Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another."

4. Jealousy should not prevail among brethren as it did among Joseph’s brothers

Genesis 37 Jealousy results in treacherous deeds

5. Therefore:

a. Let us keep our covenant with the church

b. Hebrews 13:1 "Let brotherly love continue."

Note: It cannot be MADE to continue- it has to be LET continue.

"We further engage…to remember each other in prayer."

1. The power of God who made heaven and earth is available through prayer

a. "Whatsoever ye ask…" Matthew 21:22

b. "What things soever ye desire" Mark 11:24

c. "Ask anything" John 14:14

d. Ask what ye will John 15:7

From Scriptures is it clear that prayer has an unlimited availability

2. Our prayers must be consistent

James 1:6,7 " 6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord."

James 4:3 "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts."

3. Our prayers must be persistent

a. Elijah on Mt. Carmel 1 Kings 18:42-44

b. Jesus’ teaching Luke 11:5-10; 18:1-8

4. Our Covenant is unselfish

"We engage to remember each other in prayer."

Too much of our praying is self-centered, and this too often accounts for our failure to receive.
